The ultimate hug in a mug

Updated: Oct 21, 2022

One of my favorite beverages for the colder seasons is the Golden Latte by Pick up limes. Essentially what this is, is a turmeric latte with a twist. However, I went even further and created my own twist on their recipe. It's nothing special, really, but it always warms my soul to have it in the evening. And since sweater weather is here (it's still technically warm here in Greece, but you can't say no to a warm beverage), I thought I can share it with you today.

What makes my recipe different is the nutmeg. The original recipe has cinnamon in it, but since I'm not a huge fan of cinnamon, I've swapped it with nutmeg.

Nutmeg is a spice that grows on trees in South-East Asia. It has a strong, sweet, and spicy aroma, and an earthly flavor, which makes warm recipes even warmer. I use nutmeg in banana bread, in oats, and anywhere I feel like it could fit.

Some people find this spice too strong for their tastes, but if you're like me, you should give this a try. Or don't, I'll never find out anyway.

Another thing I changed in my version is the granulated and the vanilla sugar. Feel free to adjust according to your preferences. If in doubt, try the original recipe first: Pick Up Limes: Golden Latte Instant Mix.

Ingredients

  • 3 Tbsp ground turmeric

  • 2 Tbsp ground nutmeg

  • 1½ Tbsp brown sugar

  • 1½ tsp ground cardamom

  • 1 tsp ground ginger

  • ⅛ tsp ground black pepper

  • 1 cup plant-based milk

  • ½ tsp pure vanilla extract

Step 1

Mix all the spices (turmeric, ground nutmeg, brown sugar, ground cardamom, ground ginger, ground black pepper) together in a jar until well combined. You can then seal the jar for future use or go to Step 2 right away!

Step 2

When ready to make the latte, add 1 tsp of the mixed spices to a mug, followed by 1 cup of hot plant-based milk (I prefer pea milk, soy milk or oat milk).

Step 3

Add the vanilla extract and mix well.

Step 4

Enjoy!

A few things to consider

If you know you don't like nutmeg, and you know you like cinnamon, please stick to the original recipe instead: Pick Up Limes: Golden Latte Instant Mix.

The black pepper I've found is optional when it comes to taste; it doesn't make a difference in this amount. However, I do recommend using black pepper in this recipe, as well as in all recipes involving turmeric, since the piperine in pepper helps the absorption of the curcumin in turmeric.

I recommend against using ingredients you're allergic to, obviously, and as a disclaimer, I recommend any plant-based milk of your choice, because I have a lactose intolerance and have only tried plant-based milks in my turmeric latte. I do not know how other milks taste. Also, plant-based milks usually contain less saturated fat than regular milk (coconut milk is fatty), they're hopefully cruelty-free (this includes animal cruelty and modern slavery), and they're also environmentally friendlier (unless you use almond milk, you monster), which is always a bonus.

Choose whichever recipe suites your taste buds and feel free to create your own version with further twists until you find the perfect ingredients and proportions for you.
